KTO-500 will utilize the hazardous waste of Russian Railways

July 28 Yaroslavl region held the ceremonial launch of the Waste Thermal Treatment Facility KTO-500. The ceremony was opened by the President of JSC Russian Railways Vladimir Yakunin, the Governor of Yaroslavl Sergei Jastrebov, the Head of Rospotrebnadzor Russia Anna Popova, Managing Director of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) Philippe Scholtès.

KTO-500 is the turnkey project of Safe Technologies Industrial Group, starting from the stage of the overall pre-study, putting the facility into operation. Construction of the plant was carried out from March 2014, as part of the general environmental strategy of Russian Railways to reduce the load on the environment and minimize the damage by 2030. The facility is located in the Research and Production Center, which is a part of Russian Railways.

‘It is a very important event for the Yaroslavl region,’ Sergei Jastrebov said at the opening ceremony. ‘In 2007 we first opened the Research and Production Center for Environmental Protection, and today the best in the country waste treatment facility is ready for operation.’

The intended use of the facility is thermal treatment of waste generated by Russian Railways. The equipment is capable to utilize the solid waste (sawdust, waste coal), sludge, tar, coating materials, fats and waxes of mineral oils and other complex waste. The plant is characterized by enhanced gas treatment system and includes energy recovery unit. Every year, KTO-500 is capable to dispose about 5 thousand tons of hazardous waste.

The facility consists of several production lines: the line of thermal waste treatment (500 kg/h), the line of sludge dewatering (9 cubic m/h) and steam turbine line (150 kW).

The technological process involves collection and storage of waste, watered sludge preparation, thermal decontamination, supply of reagents and gas cleaning. Heat recovery system provides heating and hot water for household and industrial premises. Thermal energy produced in the process of neutralization is converted into electrical energy for the local needs of the enterprise. Innovative control system is fully automated.

Due to high-line flue gas cleaning system, the emissions are minimal and are fully compliant with the environmental legislation of the Russian Federation.
